The Wild Party - LOST Theatre
Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
MAYHEM Musical Theatre Company is presenting the Theatre World Award-winning The Wild Party at the LOST Theatre in Wandsworth – from May 16 to May 18, 2013.
Based on Joseph Moncure March’s popular 1928 poem with a daring and destructive take on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Wild Party paints a vivid picture of a decadent and deadly all-night party, capturing the potent cocktail of bewildered innocence and worldly cynicism, poised at the fiery peak of the Jazz Age.
An award-winning score by Michael John LaChiusa and book by George C. Wolfe provide an exhilarating backdrop for this tale of passion gone awry.
In the bleak depression of 1930s America, Queenie, a beautiful but jaded Vaudeville artiste, and her lover Burrs, return to a theatre of the roaring 20s. In a relationship marked by vicious behavior and recklessness, they decide to throw the party to end all parties.
Night descends and an eclectic mix of guests arrive to join The Wild Party including a fast-hitting heavyweight boxer, a diva of infinite life experience but indeterminate age and a fresh-faced girl whose naiveté quickly evaporates. As the jazz- and gin-soaked party accelerates to a frenzied pitch, the masks and gloves come off: need, desperation and naked ambition begin to emerge.
Director Dom O’Hanlon says: “I am delighted to be working on one of the most challenging pieces of modern musical theatre at such an exciting venue. LaChiusa’s version of The Wild Party is exciting, vibrant and thoroughly original. This is a true masterpiece combining an impressive score with unforgettable characters and it has been a pleasure to bring it to life.”
