Too Marvellous For Words - Landor Theatre
Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
TOO Marvellous For Words, which showcases the songs of Johnny Mercer, runs at the Landor Theatre from Tuesday, July 14 to Sunday, July 19, 2009.
Born in Savannah exactly a century ago, Mercer’s exposure to black music was perhaps unique among the white songwriters of his generation. The music he loved – Jazz and Blues – was booming in Harlem when he moved to New York, and Broadway was singing along to the likes of George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin.
Yet although he may have collaborated with great names such as Harold Arlen, Hoagy Carmichael and Henry Mancini, Mercer has remained the unknown of the American Musical Scene – the man behind some of the greatest music of the 20th century: The Days of Wine And Roses, Ac-cent-tchu-ate The Positive, One For My Baby and Moon River.
Too Marvellous For Words is directed by Robert McWhir, with musical direction by Andrew Friesner.
Tickets: £12, £10 concessions.
Times: Tuesday to Saturday at 7.30pm, Sunday at 2.30pm.
