Season preview

THE TRICYCLE Theatre’s new season (September 2013 to March 2014) includes the return of Lolita Chakrabarti’s Red Velvet, which runs from January 23 to March 8, 2014, prior to its New York transfer.

However, the season opens with the UK premiere of Colman Domingo’s A Boy and His Soul, which runs from September 4 to September 21, 2013.

Where do you get SOUL? From watching your parents sell the house you grew up in? From discovering the family secret about your crazy cousin? Or from the childhood records found in your parents’ basement? From Stevie, Aretha, Marvin, Chaka, Barry, Gladys…and Colman.

Propelled by the beat of classic soul, smooth R&B and disco, this is the soundtrack of a boy’s coming of age in ‘70′s and ’80′s Philadelphia.

A Boy and His Soul, which premiered in New York, is also performed by Tony Award nominated actor Colman Domingo.

A Boy and His Soul is followed – from September 26 to November 9 – by the world premiere of Handbagged – Moira Buffini’s take on the relationship between the Queen and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, based on her short play from the Tricycle’s Women, Power & Politics season.

Handbagged is directed by Indhu Rubasingham and stars Stella Gonet as Margaret Thatcher and Marion Bailey as Elizabeth II.

Next comes a major revival of Mary J O’Malley’s convent school-set comedy Once a Catholic, which runs from November 21, 2013 to January 18, 2014.

The nuns at Our Lady of Fatima preach chastity and diligence as the swinging sixties approach. Final exams loom. The day of reckoning is nigh. But for the girls in class 5A, their last year in uniform is set to be one of discovery of the less holy kind…

Presented by the Tricycle Theatre and Royal Court Liverpool, Once a Catholic is directed by Kathy Burke.

Speaking about the new season, Artistic Director Indhu Rubasingham said: “It’s not only the developments on stage that make this season special, for the first time in the Tricycle’s history we are introducing allocated seating throughout the auditorium, enabling us to offer a lower ticket price of just £8.”
