University honours theatre director Daniel Evans

THE AWARD-winning artistic director of Sheffield Theatres, Daniel Evans, will be recognised for his role as a champion of the arts in Sheffield, after being nominated for an honorary doctorate by Sheffield Hallam University.
Evans is being given the award for his development of an award-winning programme of events that has seen the city attract some of the best known names in theatre, and produced hugely successful productions of Hamlet and Othello.
Professor of English at the University, Lisa Hopkins, who nominated Evans for the award, said:
“Daniel has made Sheffield Theatres one of the most successful theatres in the UK – demonstrated by a significant number of Theatrical Management Association regional theatre award nominations, and the fantastic reviews the plays have had in national media.”
Evans trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company, and has received two Laurence Olivier Awards for his acting roles – in Merrily We Roll Along and Sunday in the Park with George, both from Stephen Sondheim He has also appeared on television in episodes of Doctor Who and Spooks.
Sheffield Hallam University will be awarding honorary doctorates to a number of key figures from the worlds of sport, business, the arts and other industries in its 2012 graduation ceremonies. Announcements will be made over coming weeks, with all ceremonies due to take place in November.
