Hello, Norma Jeane

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

VICKI Michelle (as Lynnie) will lead the cast in the London premiere of the award-winning play Hello, Norma Jeane, which will be performed at the King’s Head Theatre on September 28, October 5, 12, 19 and 26 and November 2, 2014.

It’s Spring 2003, a new war is coming and elderly Essex grandmother Lynnie has escaped from her old people’s home in Stockthorpe-on-Sea and fled 8,000 miles across the Atlantic to Hollywood, Los Angeles.

There, she has holed herself up in a run-down motel, awaiting the right moment to reveal to the world some good news that they desperately need… that of her deepest secret… that she is in fact Marilyn Monroe, coming out of hiding over forty years after faking her death in 1962.

As her gay grandson Joe turns up to take her home, he finds himself embroiled in his grandmother’s scheme, questioning his entire existence and wondering whether he can really be the offspring of Marilyn Monroe.

But is Lynnie really Marilyn? Or just a crazy old lady wanting to avoid the fate of ending her days ensconced in a nursing home? As time starts running out, Joe’s search for the truth, his and Lynnie’s self-worth and their love for each other are tested to the limit in this funny drama that is full of surprises.

Hello, Norma Jeane was one of five winners in Chicago based Pride Films and Plays’ Great Gay Play Contest in 2011 and premiered with a one-off showcase in Chicago in 2012.
