Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
JANIE Dee will star in Alan Ayckbourn’s revival of his most personal and powerful play, Woman in Mind, which runs at the Vaudeville Theatre from January 29 to May 2, 2009.
Like many other women in the UK, Susan lives with a boring, inconsiderate and unattractive husband. Like many other women, this drives her mad. Enter Susan’s mind, where fantasy and reality collide with devastating and hilarious consequences.
Woman in Mind is described as a mesmerising tale of a woman’s struggle with her imagination.
The cast will also include Perdita Avery, Bill Champion, Joanna David, Dominic Hecht, Paul Kemp and Martin Parr.
Dee’s theatre credits include Donkeys’ Years; Between the Lines; Betrayal; Much Ado About Nothing; Comic Potential, for which she won Olivier, Evening Standard and Critics’ Circle Awards for Best Actress; and Shadowlands, in which she starred alongside Charles Dance; as well as the musicals Cats; Carousel, for which she won her first Olivier; My One and Only; Oklahoma! The Sound of Music; South Pacific and Mack and Mabel, opposite David Soul.
Ayckbourn is one of Britain’s most prolific playwrights. He has written over 70 full length plays, including Bedroom Farce; the Damsels In Distress trilogy; A Chorus Of Disapproval, which won the Olivier Award for Best Comedy in 1985; Absurd Person Singular which was revived at the Garrick Theatre in December 2007 with a cast that included Jane Horrocks, John Gordon Sinclair and Jenny Seagrove; and the comic trilogy, The Norman Conquests, which is currently playing at the Old Vic Theatre.
Presented by Bill Kenwright, Woman in Mind will be designed by Roger Glossop, with lighting by Mick Hughes.
Piaf continues at the Vaudeville Theatre until January 24, 2009.
