Blood Diamond is one of this year’s Academy front runners, with nominations in five separate categories. It’s an epic drama of greed, despair and redemption set against the carnage of the civil war in Sierra Leone in the 1990s. DiCaprio’s Archer thinks he’s found his ticket out of Africa in the shape of a gem of legendary size – one of the ‘blood diamonds’ whose illicit trade fuels civil conflict.
For Hounsou’s Vandy the precious stone is the only way to save his family – and rescue his son from life as a child soldier. Brought together in prison, the two men form an uneasy alliance to smuggle the diamond out of the country and try to stay alive in the process. Idealistic journalist Maddy Bowe (Jennifer Connelly) becomes drawn into their adventure as she bears witness to the tragedy of civil war.
