Hopkins vs Calzaghe

Story by Jack Foley

WHY not jet out to Las Vegas to witness the World Championship Boxing bout between Joe Calzaghe and Bernard Hopkins as they contend The Ring Magazine World Light-Heavyweight Championship at the Thomas & Mack Center on Saturday, April 19, 2008.

In this much anticipated showdown, newly crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2007 Calzaghe will face the former middleweight King Bernard Hopkins for The Ring Magazine’s prestigious light-heavyweight title, currently held by Hopkins, in the Planet Hollywood Ring at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

Calzaghe, 44-0 (32), will make his debut both in America and at 175 pounds having unified the super-middleweight division by adding Mikkel Kessler’s WBA/WBC titles to his own WBO crown in November last year. He is now ready to step up to light-heavy to face the 42-year-old Hopkins.

35-year-old Calzaghe clashed with Hopkins at the weigh-in for Hatton/Mayweather in December and said: “It was pretty eventful, I’ve never seen such a turn-out for a weigh-in. If I can get the Hopkins fight it’d be amazing and now I know that if I come out here, if I get the sort of people come over like Hatton’s got, it’s a home away from home – it’s awesome!”

The Thomas & Mack Center is situated on the Campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on the corner of Tropicana and Swenson Avenues. Tickets cost between £205 and £852.
