Forget Eros, find love in Tooting

LOVE-struck Romeos can forget about the obvious places in London for romance, according to new research, for it’s the less glamorous locations which are providing the matchmaking places to meet other singletons.

According to a survey of postal districts by British Gas website - www.house.co.uk - which includes market research on the different types of householder in each district, Tooting is the place to go to find love - eclipsing trendiers areas such as the city centre or Clapham Junction and Putney.

The study of 18-34 year-olds found that Tooting is the second most popular place in the country to find your very own Bridget Jones, so if you get an invite with an SW17 postcode, then take it.

The area is now rife with wine bars and theme pubs and has become a popular stomping ground for those who find the more exclusive hotspots a little too expensive.

Tooting High Street has recently undergone a £20million refurbishment, while Tooting Bec Lido is the biggest open air pool in Britain (and a people magnet whenever the sun makes a rare appearance) and Tooting Bec Common provides the ideal green oasis in which to chill, or take part in sports such as football, tennis, athletics, or even horse riding.

It is also conveniently located close to Clapham Junction, Britain’s busiest mainline rail station, which provides links across London and to rural areas and the coast.

The British Gas website goes on to reveal that eight postal districts in London are among the 20 areas with the highest concentration of singletons out of a total of 275 postal districts nationwide.

For lonely hearts in areas such as Edgware, however, the news is less encouraging, as only a move away from the north London suburb will lead to romantic success. The postal code is the city’s worst place to find partners.

Commenting on the overall findings of the survey, researchers have attributed the capital’s strong overall showing on the fact that it has a higher proportion of young and mobile workers than any other city. It also boasts a thriving student population, with so many colleges and universities.

The top 10 areas in London for singletons are:
1) Tooting;
2) Hammersmith;
3) Woolwich;
4) Camden Town;
5) Walthamstow;
6) Islington;
7) Lewisham;
8) Stratford;
9) Holborn, and
10) Hackney.
