Story by: Jack Foley
BING Crosby and Al Jolsen will take on rapper, Eminem, in the
race to find the best 100 movie songs of all-time.
The American Film Institute (AFI) has invited US directors, actors
and critics to pick their favourites from a suggested 400 titles.
Almost inevitably, songs from The Sound of Music, Casablanca,
White Christmas, Chicago and 8
Mile are on the shortlist, along with Nicole Kidman and Ewan
McGregors rendition of Come What May, from Bazz Luhrmanns
Moulin Rouge.

The results will be revealed in an AFI US TV special in June
2004.
A total of 1,500 voters are also allowed to submit their own
favourites, not included among the 400 nominees, so as to gain
a completely representative picture of musical favourites.
The AFI has compiled a number of top 100s in recent years, including
favourite horror movie scene, greatest love stories and funniest
films ever made.
But Bob Gazzale, a producer of the TV special, has predicted
that the songs list will be among the most passionate in terms
of response, because people are so passionate about their
favourite movies and favourite songs, and bringing the two together
is a rather explosive combination.
