WITH the serious awards season behind us, and the blockbuster
season in full swing, the audience-friendly films battled it out
for the top honours at the MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles, on
Saturday, June 5.
Needless to say, Lord of the
Rings: The Return of the King, and Quentin Tarantino's Kill
Bill shared the spoils, winning most of the major awards between
them.
The final part of Peter Jackson's Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings
trilogy won the best film and best action sequence awards, while
Uma Thurman took the best actress prize for Kill
Bill: Volume 2, while co-star, Lucy Liu, was named best villain.
Thurman's battle with Chiaki Kuriyama was also named best fight,
while Johnny Depp took the deserved best actor award for his laugh-out-loud
Pirates of the Caribbean
performance.
Speaking at the ceremony, a delighted Thurman thanked the MTV
voters for choosing her 'kick butt, take-no-prisoners' character,
The Bride, as well as making special mention of director, Tarantino,
in a joke-laden speech.
She said: "Quentin spent many years writing this for me,
and wants to be honoured as if he were dead tonight.

"But we don't have time, so I'll have to honour you as if
you were living. Thank you, Quentin."
Another popular winner on the night was Jack Black, who took
the best comedy prize for his performance in School
of Rock, while Freaky Friday
star Lindsay Lohan (soon to be seen in US hit, Mean Girls) and
X-Men 2's Shawn Ashmore were named
best breakthrough female and male actors respectively.
The best kiss trophy was presented to Carmen Electra and Amy
Smart, for their lesbian smooch, with Owen Wilson, in the hilarious
Starsky and Hutch, while
Seann William Scott took the best dance sequence accolade, for
his dance-off in American
Wedding, for which he thanked Saturday Night Fever star, John
Travolta, for inspiration.
The light-hearted ceremony takes place, each year, in California's
Culver City, and winners receive buckets of golden popcorn for
their achievements in a number of irreverent categories.
Prize-winner, Lindsay Lohan, hosted the event, while prizes were
presented by Tom Cruise and Collateral
co-star, Jamie Fixx, and rapper, Snoop Doggy Dogg, among others.
In what proved a colourful and brash occasion, musical performances
also came from rapper, Eminem, who dropped his trousers while
performing with his group, D12, the Beastie Boys and the Yeah
Yeah Yeahs.
