Story by Jack Foley
SAY what you like about Tom Cruise, but the star never lets down his fans when touring London. Who can forget the time he seized a female fan's mobile phone and had a chat with the caller, or the time he came to the rescue of a child who was under threat of being crushed by an over-enthusiastic fan club?
Cruise knows who to thank for his fame (never mind the critics!) and on a cold Monday night in London's Leicester Square on Monday, January 21, the star delivered another memorable performance - although to find out whether it was more memorable than the one he gives in Vanilla Sky, you will have to click here!
Together with new flame and Vanilla Sky co-star, Penelope Cruz, the plucky star spent an hour meeting fans before the premiere of his new movie, which opens in UK cinemas on Friday (25th).
The effort was made all the more remarkable given that London is just one stop in a gruelling city-a-day European tour to promote the film and especially given that media scrutiny concerning his much-publicised split from wife, Nicole Kidman, has again reached fever pitch since Kidman stole the show at Sunday night's Golden Globes - walking away with Best Actress for her role as a courtesan in Moulin Rouge.
But Cruise seemed content to soak up the fans' admiration, signing autographs and grabbing mobile phones to (again) inform callers that friends were joining him in the West End for the highly anticipated screening.
And while guests then partied into the night at London's Dorchester Hotel, the couple were back at Heathrow to catch a flight to Rome to promote the film further and - no doubt - take in some of the romantic settings of the Italian capital.
UK celebrities who turned out at the party/premiere included Salman Rushdie, new Bond girl Rosamund Pike, TV presenters Dani Behr and Mariella Frostrup.
