Daniel Craig is James Bond

Feature: Lizzie Guilfoyle

WHAT do you do with Mums, eh? Talk about giving it all away but then, that's what Mum's do, isn't it? Especially when they're proud of a son or daughter. So who can blame Carol Blond for spilling the beans when son Daniel has earned himself one of the most coveted roles in film (and don't believe anyone who tells you otherwise) - the role of Bond, James Bond.....

Yes, it has now been officially confirmed - British actor Daniel Craig has beaten off tough opposition from the likes of Clive Owen, Ewan McGregor, Jude Law and Colin Farrell, to play 007 in the forthcoming Bond movie, Casino Royale.

The name sound familiar? It is, of course, Fleming's first Bond novel. Not only that, an unofficial spoof version was filmed back in 1967 with David Niven at the helm.

The new adaptation however, will be an altogether more serious affair and will see the reinvention of the Bond character - as a newly qualified 28-31 year-old who has only just earned his 007 stripes. A Bond, in fact, with fewer gadgets, fewer cringe-inducing one-liners and who has yet to have the edges knocked off him.

So how, I wonder, will Craig fare in a role made famous by the likes of Sean Connery (1962-1971), George Lazenby (1969), Roger Moore (1973-1985), Timothy Dalton (1987-1989) and Pierce Brosnan (1995-2002)?

Needless to say, he comes with good acting credentials. In 1996, he starred in TV's Our Friends in the North (pictured) since when, he has notched up memorable performances in productions such as Love Is the Devil, Some Voices, Tomb Raider, Road to Perdition (with Tom Hanks), Sylvia in which he portrayed the poet Ted Hughes, and most recently, the gangster flick Layer Cake.

On paper then, it all looks good. Only time though, will tell. In the meantime, Carol, you have plenty to shout about.
