Tautou to help crack The Da Vinci Code

Story by: Jack Foley

AMELIE star, Audrey Tautou, has landed the key role of cryptologist, Sophie Neveu, in the movie version of best-selling novel, The Da Vinci Code, according to French newspapers.

The star, who can currently be seen in A Very Long Engagement, beat Julie Delpy, Vanessa Paradis, Juliette Binoche and Kate Beckinsale to the role.

She will join Tom Hanks, as Professor Robert Langdon, and Jean Reno, as police detective, Bezu Fache, in Ron Howard's movie.

Tautou has quickly emerged as one of France's brightest female actresses following her work with Jeunet on both Amelie and A Very Long Engagement, as well as British thriller, Dirty Pretty Things.

She was selected by Howard because he preferred choosing a French actress to a big name Hollywood star.

Dan Brown's religious conspiracy thriller has sold more than 17 million copies and is centred on a global conspiracy surrounding the Holy Grail mythology.

The movie is being produced by Columbia/Sony Pictures at a rumoured cost of $100m.

It has been scheduled for for a release on May 19, 2006 in the US and France.
