Nicholson on board for Scorsese's The Departed

Story by: Jack Foley

AS IF the casting of Martin Scorsese's Infernal Affairs remake, The Departed, wasn't already hot enough, then just wait til you get a load of this!

Jack Nicholson has signed up to play the gangster boss of the Irish mafia at the heart of the story, lining up alongside Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio.

The role marks Nicholson's first outing as movie villain since his scene-stealing turn in Tim Burton's Batman 15 years ago - but promises to be a mouthwatering prospect.

Of the other key roles, Damon plays a mafia member who has infiltrated the cops, while DiCaprio is a cop who has gone undercover in the mafia - with both young stars attempting to unearth the other before their identities are blown.

If the remake comes anywhere close to the quality of the Japanese original, then we're in for some pretty spectacular fireworks.

And DiCaprio and Scorsese would appear to be on a role at the moment, given the awards success of their latest collaboration, The Aviator, which is the hot favourite for this year's Oscar.

Nicholson's last screen outing was in the superb romantic comedy, Something's Gotta Give (pictured), which continued the veteran star's decision to opt for more heart-warming roles.
