TWO highly anticipated thrillers will open and close the Times
bfi 49th London Film Festival, it has been announced.
City Of God director, Fernando Meirelles' The Constant Gardener
will open this year’s festival on Wednesday, October 19.
While the Festival will close on Thursday, November 3 with George
Clooney’s highly anticipated Good Night. And, Good Luck.
The Opening Night Gala will celebrate the UK Premiere of Fernando
Meirelles’ The Constant Gardener starring Ralph Fiennes
and Rachel Weisz.
Based on the best-selling novel by John le Carré, the
film tells the story of one man’s journey to uncover the
truth behind a personal loss and a global conspiracy.
The strong supporting cast includes Danny Huston and Bill Nighy
and the film is produced by Simon Channing Williams. United International
Pictures will release the film in the United Kingdom.
The Closing Night Gala will showcase the UK Premiere of Good
Night. And, Good Luck, directed by George Clooney and executive
produced by Steven Soderbergh.

The film chronicles the real-life
conflict between television newsman Edward R. Murrow and Senator
Joseph McCarthy. David Strathairn stars as Edward R. Murrow and
is supported by an ensemble cast including George Clooney, Robert
Downey Jr and Patricia Clarkson. Redbus Film Distribution will
release the film in the United Kingdom.
Commenting on this year’s opening and closing night films,
the Festival’s Artistic Director, Sandra Hebron, said: "We’re
delighted to be able to open and close the festival with these
two strong, distinctive films which celebrate film making which
is both assured and imaginative.
"Although very different in tone and style, the films share
a social relevance and a progressive world view, and are bold
and inventive in their approach."
The Times bfi London Film Festival is one of the most significant
events in the UK film calendar, attracting leading international
filmmakers, industry professionals and general public to London
for a two week showcase of the best cinema from around the world.
