IT may have been overlooked at the Oscars, but Peter Jacksons
The Lord of the Rings: The
Two Towers has taken top honours at the MTV Movie Awards in
Los Angeles - thanks to audiences.
The second part of Tolkiens trilogy took a total of four
awards on the night, including best movie, best action sequence,
best virtual performance (for Gollum) and best on-screen team,
for Elijah Wood, Sean Astin and Gollum.
The virtual performance statuette was accepted by Andy Serkis,
who voiced the character, but in one of many comic highlights
of the awards ceremony, the actor was confronted by an emaciated
Gollum while thanking Jackson and crew, before being forced to
listen to an expletive-filled tirade from the virtual creation
against the cast, crew and MTV.
In what proved to be a tough category, competition for the award
came from Yoda, the light-sabre wielding Jedi from Star
Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, as well as Dobby,
the elf, in Harry Potter
and The Chamber of Secrets.
Yet Yoda did not go home empty-handed, winning a prize for his
scene-stealing fight with Christopher Lee. The character appeared
on a giant screen to accept his award, saying: "Hmmm... grateful
am I to this award receive. To win, I did not expect."
The winners of the MTV awards are picked by the network's viewers,
and the whole ceremony is presented as an alternative to the usual
Hollywood award shows, taking place at the Shine Auditorium in
LA.
Of the other notable winners on the night, rapper, Eminem, took
best male and breakthrough male for 8
Mile, while Kristen Dunst won best actress for Spider-Man.
In what proved to be an excellent night for super-heroes, Spider-Man
triumphed in the best kiss category, for the clinch shared between
Dunst and Tobey Maguire, while Jennifer Garner won a breakthrough
gong for playing Elektra, in Daredevil.
Another popular winner on the night was Irish star, Colin Farrell,
who won the trans-Atlantic breakthrough award for his leading
role in sniper thriller, Phone
Booth.
The best comedy performance was won by Mike Myers, for his role(s)
in Austin Powers in Goldmember.
