QUIRKY comedy, Sideways, dominated this year's Independent Spirit
Awards, winning all six of the prizes for which it was nominated.
The endearing drama took best film, best actor (Paul Giamatti),
best supporting actor (Thomas Haden Church), best supporting actress
(Virginia Madsen), best director (Alexander Payne) and best screenplay
(Payne and Jim Taylor).
The awards are given to films made within the independent sector
and are traditionally held on the day before the Oscars - at which
Sideways is also tipped to do well.
Another Oscar nominee, Catalina Sandino
Moreno, was named best actress at the Spirit Awards, for her role
as a drug smuggler in the harrowing Colombian drama, Maria
Full of Grace.
The film also won the best first screenplay award for Joshua
Scrubs star, Zach Braff, won the award for best first feature
for Garden State, which he
wrote, directed and starred in alongside Natalie Portman.
While highly-acclaimed Spanish film, The
Sea Inside, was named won best foreign film, and actor, Rodrigo
de la Serna, took the best debut performance prize for The
Kind Of Monster was awarded best documentary.
