Sideways dominates Independent Spirit Awards (05)

Story by: Jack Foley

QUIRKY comedy, Sideways, dominated this year's Independent Spirit Awards, winning all six of the prizes for which it was nominated.

The endearing drama took best film, best actor (Paul Giamatti), best supporting actor (Thomas Haden Church), best supporting actress (Virginia Madsen), best director (Alexander Payne) and best screenplay (Payne and Jim Taylor).

The awards are given to films made within the independent sector and are traditionally held on the day before the Oscars - at which Sideways is also tipped to do well.

Another Oscar nominee, Catalina Sandino Moreno, was named best actress at the Spirit Awards, for her role as a drug smuggler in the harrowing Colombian drama, Maria Full of Grace.

The film also won the best first screenplay award for Joshua Marston.

Scrubs star, Zach Braff, won the award for best first feature for Garden State, which he wrote, directed and starred in alongside Natalie Portman.

While highly-acclaimed Spanish film, The Sea Inside, was named won best foreign film, and actor, Rodrigo de la Serna, took the best debut performance prize for The Motorcycle Diaries.

Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster was awarded best documentary.

The Independent Spirit Awards - now in their 20th year - are voted for by the 9,000 members of the Independent Feature Project/Los Angeles.
