The world is a stage - so why not eat there?

Review by Paul Nelson

IN SPITE of the fact that there are plenty of restaurants in Clapham High Street, it remains a fact that if you are going to the theatre locally, or even the pictures, the chances of getting something down your neck in comfort and without worrying about the clock are slim. The Landor Pub, in Landor Road, which houses naturally the Landor Theatre, has solved the problem.

For under £6 a snack or a full meal can be purchased and washed down with excellent beers (or wines for that matter) at pub prices, and not West End pub prices, this is, after all a local. The food, I can vouch for it, is excellent.

The menu differs day to day as to what is available in the market, or probably more like what takes the chef's fancy, and the menu isn't holy writ. He is perfectly prepared, as I have found out, to vary anything to suit your taste providing it fits in with his timetable, which early evening is based on getting theatregoers into their seats. Later, the meal can be more relaxed.

The meat is organic and free range and comes from Frank Godfrey's of Highbury.

Bearing in mind I haven't eaten the same thing twice in this extremely friendly pub, I offer a typical menu, this one from the last evening I went there. Beef Bourguignon (£5.50) is slow cooked organic free-range beef in a rich red wine gravy served with mashed potato and English green cabbage.

Stuffed Chicken Breast (£5.50), also organic, is breast stuffed with chicken mousse served on a bed of mushroom pilaf with a white wine and mushroom sauce.

Mixed Crispy Platter (£4.50), consists of two vegetable samosas, four vegetable spring rolls, two onion bhajis, homemade mango chutney, cucumber raita and a salad garnish.

For those who only trust fast food there is traditional Sausage, Mash and Onion Gravy (£5.80), or an 8oz Cheeseburger served with potato wedges (£4) or without wedges (£3). For a snack, try potato wedges with garlic mayonnaise (£2.20).

For anyone trying desperately to get from his or her work to a show with limited time, this is a godsend. No hassle. Everything at your fingertips. It needs to be sampled to be believed. I have found with a good show it makes the evening even more perfect.
