Avalokiteshvara emanating Sutra text. Japan, 1800-1900. This scroll painting shows Avalokiteshvara in his ten-headed form. The rays of light emanating from his halo are made up of lines from the Lotus Sutra, one of the most important Mahayana texts across Asia. The painting beautifully summarises the intimate link between Mahayana texts and bodhisattvas. Copyright The Trustees of the British Museum.
