A star giving a star performance

Review by David Munro

ROGERS and Hammerstein are to the theatre what Bourne and Hollingsworth or Swan and Edgar are to department stores. Names to remember, and in the case of R and H to revive with what approaches reverence in our national theatre.

Now Bernadette Peters in her new album, Bernadette Peters loves Rodgers & Hammerstein, brings her idiosyncratic voice and charm to breathe fresh life in the old warhorses and with the help of Jonathan Tunick's orchestrations and conducting makes them caracole like yearlings in the ring.

Forget the old Witch into the woods or the Annie getting her gun, here is a star giving a star performance to material which for the length of the album (alas too short) sparkles in a new light.

She makes you believe, as she did on her Sondheim album, that she really does love the songs she sings, which makes this album a must for those who in their turn love Rodgers and Hammerstein (and there must still be a few of us oldies left who do). In addition, for the rest they will come out from the Garage and hip-hop (if they must) to a grand night (and songs) for singing.

It is difficult to single out any track for special praise but the final one sums up the album - it is Something Good.

In short, this is the perfect gift to persuade the parents it is time to put a CD player in the car and to sing along all the way to Bournemouth. They might also enjoy her Sondheim album as well. After all, it is a long time to get to the coast at 30 miles an hour!
