Review: Jack Foley
IT HAS always struck me that Britney Spears is constantly striving
to be something more than she is.
Likened repeatedly to Madonna, with whom she duets on this album,
Britney became a sex symbol before her time, and has even begun
doing cover versions.
It also seems a little bit strange to be kicking off a greatest
hits long-player with a cover version, yet that's what she does
with My Perogative - the opener and title track of her latest
long-player.
But then I suppose it's in keeping with her career so far.
The greatest hits offers everything you would expect from the
artist and nothing more (unless you buy the limited edition double-disc,
which boasts some interesting remixes from the likes of Armand
Van Helden, Junkie XL and Jacques Lu Cont).
The one thing I would say about Britney, however, is that she
is nothing if not provocative.
Only Madonna rivals her in terms of press coverage, yet in terms
of quality, the two pop singers couldn't be further apart.
Britney's material panders to the younger market, is less adventurous
and, perhaps more worryingly, even panders to the lecherous among
you.
Who can forget her breakthrough single, Baby One More Time,
with her jaw-dropping schoolgirl video, or the raunch she deliberately
injects into singles such as I'm A Slave 4 U or Outrageous.
Those latter two tracks probably mark the artist at her best,
especially the Neptunes-produced Slave 4 U - but they're
nothing to write home about.
Elsewhere, her disappointing duet with Madonna, Me Against
The Music, failed to do either of the singers justice, while
material such as the bland I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman
simply bring back unwanted memories of her ill-advised film role
in Crossroads.
Fans will undoubtedly flock to it, but you can't help feeling
that this greatest hits compilation has come a little too soon
for this particular artist.
