Review: Jack Foley
TRENDY German film, The
Edukators, is one of the best films of the moment, featuring
a trio of German students who creatively and non-violently warn
members of affluent society that their 'days of plenty are numbered'.
As such, it boasts a similarly trendy soundtrack, featuring some
of the hippest acts of the moment (Franz Ferdinand and Radio 4)
as well as some popular German favourites.
What's more, it's been compiled by the director and stars of
the movie themselves, to reflect the mood of the film and each
of their own characters.
As such, Daniel Brühl chose Tocotronic's Ich bin viel
zu lange mit Euch Mitgegangen and Mediengruppe Telekommander's
Trend for his character, Jan, while Julia Jentsch chose
Depeche Mode's timeless Personal Jesus and Pheonix's
If I Ever Feel Better for her character, Jules.
Although I'm not entirely sure what Slut's Easy To Love is
doing on the soundtrack!
Of the really good stuff on this 2-CD compilation, Franz Ferdinand's
Darts of Pleasure is an interesting taster of their debut
album, while New York-based disco-punk rockers, Radio
4, contribute the excellent Dance To The Underground.
Brighton-based duo, Lucky Jim, contribute two tracks, in the
form of the poignant Halleluja, and the Dylan-throwback,
My Soul Is On Fire, taken from their excellent album,
Our Troubles End
Tonight.
Such tracks provide an interesting and much-needed contrast to
the harder German dance anthems (which sound hopelessly European)
while showcasing the best of the new with some classics from the
past - most notably Leonard Cohen's Sisters of Mercy.
Strong, too, are the likes of Nada Surf's Hyperspace
and Placebo's Bulletproof Cupid, making this an eclectic
listen that serves as an appropriate metaphor for the conflicting
ideology of the movie.
If nothing else, it might just edukate fans of the movie to some
hip new music, while also tossing in the odd classic from the
past (that ought to fit in well with any student playlist).
