Layer Cake - OST

Review: Jack Foley

EVERY good crime film deserves a good soundtrack - or so it seems - and Layer Cake is no exception.

Following in the footsteps of the likes of Lock, Stock and Snatch, Layer Cake (directed by Matthew Vaughn and starring Daniel Craig) delivers an eclectic mix of tracks that reflect the expansive nature of the screenplay.

There's some cult classics, some 80s cheese, some club favourites, and some genuinely cool customers thrown into the mix - making the soundtrack an excellent compilation album, as well as a good reminder of some of the film's key scenes.

Primary among them, of course, is the Duran Duran classic, Ordinary World, which is used to such memorable effect on the screen, as well as FC Kahuna's entrancing Hayling, which provides a fitting backdrop to one of Craig's monologues.

The Kylie/Ulterior Motive track, Can't Get Blue Monday Out of My Head, is a trendy blending together of two distinctive tracks, while Starsailor's Four To The Floor gets a chic Soulsavers makeover, to bring something a little different to the table.

It's little touches such as this that make the soundtrack feel more worthwhile.

Elsewhere, The Cult's timeless She Sells Sanctuary always sounds terrific in whatever context it's played, while The Source, featuring Candi Staton, also provide a guilty retro-tipped pleasure with their club anthem, You Got The Love.

But out of the 15 tracks on offer, the soundtrack barely puts a foot wrong, making it the sort of effort that can just as easily be enjoyed by anyone who hasn't even seen the film.

Music fans might want to consider getting a slice of this action.
