RELEASED to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the movie,
the Top Gun soundtrack is an essential companion to the new DVD
(released simultaneously), as well as a glorious nostalgia trip
through one of the 80s finest films.
This deluxe edition boasts every song in a digitally re-mastered
format, as well as a souvenir booklet that includes iconic photos
from the film, as well as five bonus tracks inspired by it.
The five tracks in question, however, probably provide the weak
links, given that they include Europe's The Final Countdown,
Starship's Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now and Jennifer Rush's
The Power of Love - all former chart-toppers that have
not aged well!!
Rather than dwelling on the songs which didn't feature in the
movie, however, why not kick back and enjoy the memory of Harold
Faltermeyer's epic Top Gun Anthem (which rivals his work
on Beverley Hills Cop), or the Kenny Loggins' duo, Danger
Zone and Playing With The Boys.
Danger Zone, of course, cannot fail to revive memories
of Tom Cruise and co pulling all manner of daring stunts in their
jet fighters, while Playing With The Boys accompanied
the sweaty volleyball sequence that surely adds credence to Quentin
Tarantino's gay-reference theory.
Cheap Trick's Mighty Wings is another high-powered anthem
that matches the velocity of the fighter pilot heroics, while
Berlin's former number one, Take My Breath Away, is undoubtedly
one of the timeless romantic movie anthems (featuring on countless
love collections).
But then when it comes accompanied with Kelly McGillis looking
as sultry as she did in the movie, you won't mind the cheese value
of listening to it.
To cap it all, there's even some real sing-along moments such
as Otis Reading's peerless (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay
and Jerry Lee Lewis' riotous Great Balls of Fire, in
original form.
The Top Gun soundtrack is a high energy, shamelessly enjoyable
bundle of energy that epitomises the movie's tagline of 'feeling
the need for speed'. It makes you want to return to the movie
several times over, if only to hang out with Maverick, Goose and
the boys all over again!
