Story: Jack Foley
THE phenomenal success story that is The Darkness continued on
Thursday night (August 21, 2003), when the glam rockers picked
up two of the top awards at this year's Kerrang! Awards.
The over-hyped quartet, who have succeeded in making big hair,
Queen-style guitar riffs, and skin-tight catsuits in vogue again,
took the coveted best album and best live act awards at the music
magazine's 10th annual ceremony in London.
The accolades cap a remarkable transition for the Suffolk-based
band, whose debut album, Permission to Land, has already
gone gold, and who supported Robbie Williams at one of Britain's
biggest ever rock concerts earlier this month at Knebworth (not
that this is anything to be proud of!).
They are also among the favourites to nab this year's Mercury
Music Prize, despite facing stiff competition from the more established
likes of Coldplay and Radiohead.
Of the other notable winners on the night, US rockers, Metallica
won a special award in recognition of their huge success over
more than 20 years. They have recently released a new album, St
Anger, which has gone down a storm with fans.
Californian band, Red Hot Chili Peppers, won the Classic Songwriter
award for their latest album, the brilliant,
By the Way.
And nu-metal favourites, Linkin Park, won Best International
Act, while Best Single went to Maryland four-piece, Good Charlotte,
for Lifestyles of the Rich and the Famous.
Evanescence took the prize for Best International Newcomer, having
burst onto the scene with Bring Me To Life, while Feeder won Best
British Act and Jackass took the Spirit of Rock prize.
