Lemon Jelly announce 'secret' new single

Story: Jack Foley

LEMON Jelly are fast cornering the market in the offbeat and endearingly obscure.

Anyone who was at their last gig should know what I'm talking about (given that it dispensed with a support act in favour of a raffle evening with the Grim Reaper) - but then their music should also provide some indication.

Well, now the wobbly duo of Nick Franglen and Fred Deakin's have announced the release of another 'secret' single, in tandem with some new tour dates, which find them playing Brixton Academy on October 11.

The new single will be called Rolled Oats and, according to the XFM website, is expected to be released on the band's own Jelly Lab label sometime over the next few weeks.

However, it won't be easy to find, and it's no ordinary release.

The single will only be available on limited edition 7" gold vinyl and will arrive in a special plain cardboard sleeve inside a spray-painted hessian bag.

It follows the Jelly's previous 'secret' release, Soft, which featured a sample from Chicago's If You Leave Me Now, and which eventually cropped up as a B-side on the Nice Weather For Ducks CD single.

Both of the new tracks on the 7" are based around samples from other songs.

The A-side, Rolled, is arranged around a loop from George Michael's 1990 track, Heal The Pain, while flipside, Oats, will feature a riff from '70s rockers, Bad Company's Feel Like Making Love.

In order to get hold of the much sought-after copies, however, fans will be expected to keep an eye on record shops across the land, as they will just 'turn up in certain record shops' over the next few weeks.

It may even be available online.

In what is proving to be a great year for Lemon Jelly, ,the band's current album, Lost Horizons, has recently gone gold in the UK and been nominated for the Mercury Music Prize.

The London tour date is one of several they have announced around the country, to bring the year to a suitably memorable close.

The rest of the October dates are:

Birmingham Carling Academy (October 2)
Manchester Carlling Apollo (3)
Glasgow Carling Academy (4)
Brighton Dome (6)
Norwich UEA (7)
Bristol Colston Hall (8)
