Story: Jack Foley
A LONG time has passed since Martina Topley Bird helped to redefine
music with her then partner, Tricky, on the acclaimed album, Maxinquaye,
as well as the LPs which followed.
But now she is back, with a debut solo album, Quixotic, due for
release later this year, and first single, Need One, generating
a fair amount of buzz around the industry.
Co-written and co-produced by Martina, Need One features Josh
Homme and Mark Lanegan from US alternative rockers, Queens of
the Stone Age, with Josh on guitar and ex-Screaming Trees
man, Mark, providing additional vocals.

The result has been described as an intoxicating brew of Martinas
evocative bluesy vocals, swirling guitars and a dynamic mix of
live and programmed beats.
It provides an excellent tasteer of what to expect from this
Summer's album, which has been hailed as an emotive, enticing
and challenging piece of work, which is both personal and universal.
Quixotic also features co-production credits from Tricky, as
well as the ultra-cool David Holmes and Martinas writing
partners, Nick Bird, Steve Crittal and Alex MacGowan with string
arrangements from David Arnold (of James Bond and Bjork fame).
Re-mixes of Need One come from Riton and the single is scheduled
for a May 26 release date. For a taster of what to expect, click
