Blok Busta - New Players Theatre

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

MIKE Bennett’s new glam-rock musical comedy, Blok Busta, runs at the New Players Theatre from March 24 to April 18, 2009.

Blending an original score with hits from classic 70’s glam rockers such as David Bowie, Sweet, Roxy Music, Slade, Alice Cooper, T. Rex and Mott the Hoople, Blok Busta was inspired by Sweet’s No. 1 hit Blockbuster.

The action takes place on the streets of Glamsville, a town terrorised by the evil ‘psycho-killer’ known as Busta. The weapon of choice is disco music, a banned substance in Glamsville, and known to be deadly to anyone unlucky enough to be exposed to its murderous qualities. Intrepid Inspector Stone is hot on the trail – but can he expose the identity of the mysterious killer and stop the murder spree?

Described as a riotous whodunit to really get your platforms stomping, Blok Busta is directed by Alkis Kritikos, who began his career at the Royal Court Theatre in the 1970s, working with David Hare and Stephen Frears. His other work includes The Rocky Horror Show with the original London cast.

Bennett’s scriptwriting career includes work for Frankie Howerd, The Muppets and Channel 4’s legendary The Word, as well as several West End plays. As a record producer, he has worked with musical superstars such as The Fall, The Stranglers, Ian Brown, Gregory Isaacs and Sweet.

Kritikos and Bennett last worked together on the 2001 Edinburgh Fringe/Bloomsbury Theatre hit musical All Cloned Up.

Blok Busta is designed by David Burrows, with musical supervision by Pedro Ferreira (producer of The Darkness’ hit album Permission to Land), musical direction by Steve Etherington and choreography by Francesca Jaynes (Topsy Turvy, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Sweeney Todd).

Tickets: £20, £15 concessions.

Times: Tuesday to Saturday at 7.30pm, Saturday matinee at 3pm.
