A tropical tale for Hampstead Theatre

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

THE EUROPEAN premiere of Nilo Cruz's Broadway play, Anna in the Tropics, which won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize, opens on November 30, 2004 (previews from November 25) at Hampstead Theatre where it will run for a limited season until January 8, 2005.

Starring in Indhu Rubasingham's new production, will be Diana Quick and Joseph Mydell.

A lyrical play, Anna in the Tropics is set in the 1920's, in a family-run cigar factory in Tampa, Florida and where, in accordance with tradition, a 'lector' is employed to read aloud to the workers.

Anna Karenina is the lector's chosen book and the heady mix of Tolstoy's intrigues, the tropical heat and the allure of the American dream, in what then, was the heart of Cuban America, creates a volatile mix of emotions.

Diana Quick who takes on the role of Ofelia, has appeared on-screen in Brideshead Revisited, The Woman in White, Rasputin, Nostradamus and Saving Grace.

And for her work in theatre, she has won the TMA Best Actress Award and a Whatsonstage.com Best Actress nomination for Ghosts and After Mrs Rochester respectively.

Joseph Mydell has appeared in Twelfth Night and The Prisoner's Dilemma for the RSC and in Alice Adventures Underground and Angels in America at the National Theatre.

Further casting has yet to be announced.
