Preview by Paul Nelson
BASED
on an original idea by Barb Jungr, The Ballad of Norah's Ark is a major
new piece of work. This will be a sneak preview, a semi-staged concert performance
of the musical, and will open at the Drill Hall 2 on May 1 at 8pm.
Through pop, gospel and soul music, Jungr and Russell Churney's musical tells
the story of a downtrodden Norah, and her rise and fall as a modern day prophet.
Described as Britain's answer to Juliette Greco and Serge Gainsbourg, 'A British
Piaf', 'legendary' and 'a cult', Barb Jungr is the leading singer and song
stylist of cabaret and chansons in Britain. With a unique recording and performance
history, she is a driving force of contemporary European cabaret in the wider
world.
Every Grain Of Sand, which celebrates the work of the legendary American
songwriter Bob Dylan, was released in 2002 to great critical and chart success.
Described as 'a world class vocalist' by Dominic Cavendish in the Daily
Telegraph, Barb has also carved a prominent and individual furrow with
her renditions of Brel and Ferre in her solo stage shows.
Russell Churney spent seven years as MD/pianist for Julian Clary, touring
extensively in Britain and overseas and appeared in two series of Sticky
Moments for Channel 4. Since then, he has worked with Barb Jungr as MD/co-deviser
on the music shows Barb, Bob and Brel, Songs From The Heart
and Killing Me Softly among others.
In a story featuring a chorus of angels, a terrible drought, an enormous Ark
and eventually a tempestuous storm and flood this is a contemporary musical
theatre project about epic themes on a grand scale.
We are promised we won't get wet this time!
