Perview by Paul Nelson
AFTER a tremendously successful UK tour last year, which I reported
to Indielondon before the event, the RSC (that's The Reduced Shakespeare
Company) is presenting its new show The Bible: The Complete Word
of God (abridged).
It joins the two shows already in residence at the theatre, The
Complete History of America (abridged) and the mother of the shows
(probably of all successful mad shows) The Complete Works of William
Shakespeare (abridged).
The latter has now been in residence at The Criterion for eight
years, I will repeat that, eight, which makes it London's longest
running comedy. Not bad for a show that was originally booked
for three months only as a filler. What is more, the booking period
for the show(s) has been extended yet again, this time to September
of this year.
The history of the new show is a strange case of happenstance.
While on tour they found a book in a hotel room, read it, probably
aloud to each other, and then created their third show. In this
new production, the RSC gallop from Eve to Exodus, through the
Epistles, the Apostles and the Gospels from fig leaf to final
judgement.
They explore deep meaningful theological topics such as: Was
Jesus a good carpenter? Did Adam and Eve have navels?

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) is a high-speed
romp through all 37 of Shakespeare's plays (and 154 sonnets) in
97 minutes presented by three men in tights.
The Complete History of America (abridged) offers a delightful
mutilation of 500 years on 5,000 seconds from Columbus to Bush
and everything in between. It is the ultimate history lesson,
reminding us that it's not the length of your history that matters
- it's what you've done with it.
Now, let the bad boys of abridgement save you from damnation
as they deliver chapter and verse this tribute to the Good Book,
The Bible.
See this show, or go to hell! Be you saint or sinner, go and
redeem yourself!
