Explosive drama transfers to Old Red Lion

Preview by Paul Nelson

VAN Badham's explosive new play about terrorism transfers to London this Autumn following its acclaimed World Premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Camarilla's gripping vision of London under terrorist attack cements Badham's reputation as a pioneer of contemporary political theatre.

A bomb explodes in a crowded London shopping street. Nobody knows who the terrorists are, or their motives. Public intellectual, Prof. Maggy Tanner, has always advocated dialogue with the terrorists, but as she recovers from the blast outside, another bomb is detonated in her own family.

Her long-estranged stepson turns up on her doorstep and a ticking clock of unresolved separations and family secrets thunders towards unwanted confrontations. A mother's love. A daughter's ambition. A son's vengeance.

As Maggy's world crumbles around her, the question echoes in her mind - are the terrorists without, or within?

Van Badham's star has been ever ascendant since her UK debut at 2002's Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where her blistering black comedy, Kitchen, wowed audiences and critics alike.

She has since enjoyed debut shows in London and New York, sold out yet another season in Sydney and written for The Royal Court and BBC.

nabokov in association with The Old Red Lion Theatre presents Camarilla by Van Badham at The Old Red Lion, 418 St John Street, Islington, Tuesday 30 September - Saturday 25 October 2003 (not Mondays), 8pm. Tickets 020 7837 7816.
