From Versace knickers to scheming vicars!

Preview by Paul Nelson

THE Fulham Jesus, coming to Baron's Court Theatre from January 28 to February 15,, will be the world premiere of an hilarious comedy by Brenda Gottsche, that takes a satirical look at the spiritual journey of several Fulham residents.

Undergoing a 'road to Damascus' experience the day a treasured piece of art she believes to be 'The Fulham Jesus' goes missing from the jetty outside the River Cafe, housewife Sallie Owen sets out on a one-woman mission to liberate the residents of Fulham from the slavery of consumerism.

Will Angie, her best friend, join her in her mission? How will local vicar, the Rev Ray, take the news that his already dwindling flock prefers to worship this 'false god' in Sallie's living room?

Local playwright Brenda Gottsche based her play on an actual 30ft blood-spattered wood sculpture, 'The Man-Vessel', by Shepherd's Bush Romanian-born artist Mircea Roman, that bitterly divided opinion in the borough when it was first sited on a riverside jetty. It was removed after complaints by residents, then was returned but suffered £20,000 worth of damage when vandals poured green and white paint over the head and chest.

Director Jeremy Bond recently directed the British premiere of Charles J Fourie's Big Boys at Croydon Warehouse and Mr Newman's Fear of Trees at the Old Red Lion. He co-produced and co-directed the Old Vic's A Season In South Africa, where he also directed Samantha Bond in a reading of Fourie's The Lighthouse Keeper's Wife.
