Wrestling with the sexuality of Shakespeare's classic

Preview by Paul Nelson

THE Wrestling School will present their new production, at the Riverside Studios from Tuesday, October 22 to November 2.

Gertrude - The Cry is Howard Barker's startling and revealing response to Hamlet. This entirely new story exposes the sexual nature of the crime at the core of Shakespeare's play.

Howard's powerful and poetic language, provocative ideas and rich, dark humour build a compelling and erotic study of the sexuality and secrecy that seethes below the surface of Shakespeare's most famous play. In this new world of Elsinore, Howard Barker defends Hamlet's reviled mother and her adulterous affair with Claudius, depicting them as lovers driven beyond reason.

In a continually changing world, individual morals must evolve to keep up. Howard Barker has often sought new moralities in the darker spaces of the world. Here he turns Shakespeare upside down to reveal the pain of those normally considered to be guilty.

Gertrude - The Cry shows the essential pity that attaches to the immoral and bestows on them a form of innocence that challenges the ethics of both Shakespeare's time and our own.

Howard Barker is at the forefront of British theatre, applauded for his fearless exploration of the darker side of power, sexuality and human behaviour.

The Wrestling School has a reputation for mounting outstanding productions of Howard Barker's work, drawing enthusiastic audiences fro all over Europe into these inspiring plays through a compelling mix of language, sound and image.

Gertrude - The Cry opened at Kronberg Castle, Elsinore, Denmark on August 6. Barker's work is highly respected in Denmark. He was recently commissioned by the National theatres of Denmark and Sweden to mark the opening of the new bridge connecting the two countries.

After its tour of the UK, Gertrude - The Cry opens in London on October 23.
