Kelly and Holden in the running for Olivier Awards

Story by Jack Foley

TELEVISION personalities, Matthew Kelly and Amanda Holden, will compete with more established thesps, such as Kenneth Branagh and Kristin Scott Thomas, for this year’s Laurence Olivier Awards, which seek to honour the best in London theatre.

TV host, Kelly, has landed a best actor nomination for his performance as Lenny, in the stage version of John Steinback’s novel, Of Mice and Men, while Holden is in the fray for best actress in a musical, for her acclaimed turn in Thoroughly Modern Millie, for which she will also compete with her co-star, Maureen Lipman.

Branagh is nominated for Edmond, at the Cottesloe Theatre, and Sheen for Caligula, which played at the Donmar Warehouse.

In the best actress category, meanwhile, Prime Suspect star, Helen Mirren, received a nomination for her part in the play, Mourning Becomes Electra, while Kristin Scott Thomas received a nod for Three Sisters.

The best actor in a musical category includes Michael Brandon, for his role in Jerry Springer - The Opera, as well as his co-star, David Bedella. They will be up against Ragtime’s Graham Bickley and Kevyn Morrow.

Jerry Springer - The Opera is also up for best musical, along with Thoroughly Modern Millie and Terrence McNally's Ragtime, while best new play will be decided from Hitchcock Blonde, The Pillowman, Elmina’s Kitchen and Democracy.
