THE OLD VIC has confirmed that Kevin Spacey will take on the
title role in a new Trevor Nunn production of Richard
II when it opens on September 13, 2005, for a limited
period only - until November 26, 2005.
It will be Spacey's third successive starring role at the Old
Vic - the first in National
Anthems and currently, in The
Philadelphia Story.
But for both Spacey and Nunn, Richard II will be a first
- for Spacey, it will mark his UK Shakespearean debut; while for
Nunn, a former artistic director of both the Royal Shakespeare
Company and the National Theatre, it will be the first time he
has directed this particular work.

He is, though, no stranger to the
Old Vic, with last year's acclaimed production of Hamlet
to his credit.
Richard II also makes good Spacey's promise to return
to the classics in his second season as artistic director of the
theatre.
Then, and in complete contrast, the pantomime Aladdin
returns to the Old Vic for the second consecutive year and
will run from December 6, 2005, to January 22, 2006.
So far, only Sir Ian McKellen, reprising his role of Widow Twankey,
has been confirmed.
However, it's been revealed that a new song has been specially
written for the 05/06 production by Old Vic trustee, Sir Elton
John.
