Throat - a witty, sexy fusion of circus, physical comedy and dance

Preview by Paul Nelson

THROAT, a witty and sexy fusion of circus, physical comedy and dance, will open at the Drill Hall on April 5, at 8.30pm, for a run of eight performances only.

Throat is a stunning display of physical grace and eroticism, and deals with sex, male identity and the yearning to be loved. Harnessing the effects of light and water, Throat also explores the nature of performing for oneself, a partner, an audience.

John-Paul Zaccarini shifts from hilarity to despair, vulnerability to over-confidence, suspended above the stage, shedding clouds of flour, slithering in pools of water on stage; transforming himself into representations of all levels of sex, love and that messy stuff in between.

Zaccarini has worked with DV8 Physical Theatre (Enter Achilles), appeared in pop videos with various artists including Jamiroquai and The Rolling Stones, and starred as SkyBoy in The Millennium Dome Show.

Throat was the first creation of Company F/Z, a unique duo whose theatre derives from a contemporary circus root. Recent recipients of the Jerwood Prize for contemporary circus, Company F/Z are hailed as innovators because of their original synthesis of comedy, thrilling physical energy and spectacular visual effects.

Theirs is a very particular collaboration - Flick Ferdinando, a comedy/physical theatre director and Zaccarini, a choreographer/dancer and consummate aerialist.

Throat won a Total Theatre award at the Edinburgh Festival last year. It continues the Drill Hall season of weekend performances Saturdays at 6pm and 8.30pm, Sundays 4pm. (Please note that there will be no 6pm performance on April 5)

Future productions in this season at the Drill Hall include:
Elizabeth Mansfield's Portraits in Song (March 8-30);
MTL's brand new version of The Marriage of Figaro (May 11 - June 8);
Irregular Records artists performing a short season of English Chansons (March 20 - 30), Ernesto Tomasini in True or Falsetto The Secret History of the Castrati (April 3 - 17);
