Casting news

HELENA Blackman and Daniel Boys star alongside Robert J. Sherman in A Spoonful of Sherman. An evening of musical theatre cabaret celebrating a century of Sherman music, it runs at Live at Zédel at Crazy Coqs from August 7 to August 20, 2017.

Third generation songwriter Robert J. Sherman (Love Birds, Bumblescratch) narrates the story of his musical family – from his Grandfather, Tin Pan Alley writer Al Sherman, who wrote popular songs for performers as varied as Al Jolson, Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday, through to the current day with songs from his own fringe hit Love Birds.

On piano will be Christopher Hamilton.

Robert B. Sherman and Richard M. Sherman aka The Sherman Brothers are the most successful songwriting partnership in the history of Hollywood, composing more movie musical songs and acclaimed film scores than any other writing team.

From the Oscar-winning Chim Chim Cher-ee to Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and Feed the Birds in Mary Poppins to the unforgettable Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, which earned them their third of nine Oscar nominations, their songs have entertained the world for more than 60 years.

Helena Blackman came second in the BBC 1 TV talent show How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? Nominations include a TMA award for playing Nellie Forbush in the UK tour of South Pacific, a Broadway World West End award for the role of Lady Caroline in Titanic The Musical and an Off West End award for her portrayal of Gertrude Lawrence in Noel & Gertie. She was also a runner up in The Voice of Musical Theatre 2006 for BBC Wales and BBC Radio 2.

Her other credits include Millie Pontipee in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (UK Tour), Eliza Dolittle in My Fair Lady and Maria Von Trap in The Sound of Music (both Kilworth House), Lily/Rose in The Secret Garden (West Yorkshire Playhouse), Helen Fogel in Sondheim’s Saturday Night (Arts Theatre, West End), Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz (Leicester Haymarket) and Gypsy Rose Lee in Gypsy (Millennium Centre, Cardiff).

Blackman released her debut album The Sound of Rodgers & Hammerstein in 2011. Her recording of I Vow to Thee My Country was used on The Queens 90th Birthday Celebration CD.

Daniel Boys’ theatre credits include The Boys in the Band (Park Theatre/National tour/Vaudeville Theatre), Grease (Victoria Palace Theatre), Spamalot (Playhouse Theatre), Tommy in Concert (Prince Edward Theatre), Avenue Q (Gielgud Theatre/Noel Coward Theatre – winner of the 2009 Whatsonstage Theatregoers Choice Award for Best Takeover in a Role), Rent (Prince of Wales Theatre/National tour), Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris (Charing Crosss Theatre), I Love You Because (Landor Theatre), Sweeney Todd (Royal Festival Hall) and Ordinary Days and Wolfboy (Trafalgar Studios).
