Spring 2016 at the Tricycle
Season preview
THE TRICYCLE Theatre has announced its programme for Spring 2016 and it includes the Theatre Royal Bath production of Christopher Hampton’s new translation of Florian Zeller’s The Mother. Starring BAFTA-winner Gina McKee reprising her role as Anne, it runs from January 21 to March 5.
Anne loved that time in her life when she prepared breakfast each morning for her two young children, Sara and Nicholas. Now her children have grown up and have lives and loves of their own. Spending hours alone, Anne broods upon the actions of her husband and longs for the return of her favoured son.
Molière Award-winning playwright Florian Zeller returns to the Tricycle following 2015’s critically-acclaimed sell-out run of The Father.
Also reprising their roles are Richard Clothier (as The Father, Peter) and William Postlethwaite (The Son, Nicholas). They are joined by new cast member Frances McNamee (Love’s Labour’s Lost, Pride and Prejudice) as The Girl, Élodie. Laurence Boswell directs.
The Mother is followed by The Man in The Woman’s Shoes. A one man show written, performed and directed by Mikel Murfi, it runs from April 4 to April 23.
Pope John Paul I is not long dead, autumn is closing in and Pat Farnon has ‘some business’ to do in town. Set in Ireland in October 1978, The Man In The Woman’s Shoes follows the life of Pat Farnon as he walks to town and back again.
Described as funny, tender and at times downright daft, this beautifully observed piece has toured across the USA and Ireland, including a sell-out run at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin.
Next, it’s the turn of Mark Thomas, who’s back with his unique blend of theatre, stand up and activism thrown in with a dash of journalism and a dollop of mayhem. Trespass runs from April 25 to May 7.
If the ramblers of the 1930’s were here now, what would they do to open up the cities? How do we turn the skyscrapers and corporate squares into our playgrounds? Mark sets out to try and carve a small space in the urban world where mischief and random chance can lurk. No one knows where this show is going to end up.
Completing the season is Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist and playwright Ayad Akhtar’s intense political thriller The Invisible Hand. Directed by the Tricycle’s Artistic Director Indhu Rubasingham (A Wolf In Snakeskin Shoes, Multitudes, Handbagged, Paper Dolls, Red Velvet), it runs from May 12 to July 2.
American Banker Nick Bright knows that his freedom comes at a price. Confined to a cell within the depths of rural Pakistan, every second counts. Who will decide his fate? His captors, or the whims of the market?
This fast moving contemporary play lays bare the raw, unfettered power of global finance.
