Monsters - Arcola Theatre

Based on the killing of James Bulger in February 1993, Niklas Rådström’s Monsters receives its UK premiere at the Arcola Theatre, where it runs from May 9 (previews from May 6) to May 30, 2009.
In a forest of monitors, speakers and microphones, this stark, poetic play will not only explore the immediate events surrounding James’ killing, but will also ask how and why we re-tell stories, and why you have come to watch and listen.
Four actors will deconstruct what happened that February in a poignant theatrical experience, swapping and sharing roles to create a different performance every night. Based on the facts, the voices of Robert, Jon, Robert’s mum, Jon’s mum and the police investigators will confront our personal and collective memories and invite us to imagine the truth anew.
Christopher Haydon (Notes from Underground) directs Lucy Ellinson, Sandy Grierson, Jeremy Killick and Victoria Pratt.
Speaking about the production, Mehmet Ergen, Artistic Director of Arcola Theatre, said: “Monsters is one of three challenging plays this season, exemplifying theatre’s vital role in creating a safe place to explore subjects of great sensitivity.”
Niklas Rådström is one of Sweden’s most prolific writers. In 1979, he won the Aftonbladets Poetry Award and in 1992, Sweden’s most prestigious literary award, the August Award, for his novel While Time Thinks of Other Things.
Monsters is presented by Strawberry Vale Productions, whose previous work includes The Living Unknown Soldier, Mojo Mickybo and Notes from Underground.
