HARRY Potter & The Deathly Hallows: Part 1 continued to dominate the US and international box office, topping a healthy Thanksgiving weekend in America with a further estimated five day total of $76.3 million.
If confirmed Monday, the film’s total US box office will have reached $220.4 million after just two weeks of release.
Hallows strong performance was also enough to beat several new openers, including Disney 3D entry Tangled, which marked the 50th animated release from the company.
That film still took a healthy $69 million thanks to strong word of mouth, solid reviews and the ongoing popularity of the Disney brand.
Cut down to the three-day weekend period, the respective film’s tallies were $50.3 million and $49.1 million, which showed that Disney gained momentum on Harry Potter as the weekend progressed.
Of the other new openers, the Christina Aguilera-Cher song and dance movie Burlesque debuted in fourth place, with an estimated five-day take of $17.2 million, while Anne Hathaway-Jake Gyllenhaal romantic drama Love & Other Drugs came in sixth with an estimated $14 million.
Dwayne Johnson’s return to more adult orientated movies, Faster, came in behind Drugs in seventh spot, with an estimated $12.2 million.
Of the strong holdover titles, DreamWorks Animation’s Megamind continued to show good pedigree ahead of its UK release this Friday (December 3).
