Jameson Empire Awards 2013: Skyfall and Jennifer Lawrence among winners

Story by Jack Foley

JAMES Bond movie Skyfall has been named best film at the 2013 Jameson Empire Awards.

The film went into the evening with six nods and was a clear public favourite once votes had been cast. Sam Mendes also took the coveted best director for his work on the film and picked up a second individual prize, the Empire Inspiration award.

Daniel Craig was, however, beaten to best actor by The Hobbit‘s Martin Freeman, while Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence was crowned best actress for her work in The Hunger Games.

Ben Wheatley’s Sightseers was named best British film by audiences, Tom Holland was named best male newcomer for his work on The Impossible and Samantha Barks took the best female newcomer prize for her role in Les Miserables.

Ted was awarded best comedy, Headhunters won best thriller and Dredd 3D picked up The Art Of 3D award.

Further awards went to Dame Helen Mirren, who took the Legend prize in recognition of a career that has included films such as Gosford Park, The Queen, The Long Good Friday, The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, And Her Lover and this year’s Hitchcock. She was presented to her by Tom Hiddleston.

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, who was named Hero of the Year, which was presented by his Woman In Black director James Watkins. That film took best horror.

And Danny Boyle also won gold at the Awards, collecting the Empire Outstanding Contribution award. The award acknowledges Boyle’s stellar career so far, with highlights cited on the night including his outstanding work on everything from Shallow Grave to Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours and this year’s Trance.

The Jameson Empire Done In 60 Seconds short film award-winner was Philip Askins for his remake of Blade Runner. He was shortlisted on a list of 22 nominees by the voting public, which were then whittled down to the Top 5 by six judges: Tom Hiddleston, Edith Bowman, Alex Zane, Joanne Froggatt, Bauer Media CEO Paul Keenan and Editor-In-Chief of Empire Mark Dinning, who finally picked their winner.

Now in its 18th year, the Jameson Empire Awards were presented at a ceremony at Grosvenor House, a JW Marriott Hotel, in Park Lane on Sunday, March 24, 2013.

The Jameson Empire Film Awards Special will be transmitted on Saturday, March 30 on Sky Movies at 8.30pm and will be repeated on Sunday, March 31 at 7.30pm on Sky Movies Showcase. It will also be repeated throughout the week and on Sky Go and On Demand on the Sky Box.
