Katy Perry - One For The Boys

Katy Perry, One Of The Boys

Review by Jack Foley

IndieLondon Rating: 2.5 out of 5

KATY Perry is currently riding high atop the UK charts with her breakthrough smash I Kissed A Girl. She claims to deliver sharp, witty pop-rock with a biting edge, as evidenced in her playful lesbian encounter of a hit single.

I’m not quite sure why the song has become such a phenomenon. Yet, it seems to have captured the record buying public’s imagination. Admittedly, it’s fun. But it’s really nothing special… much like the rest of her debut album.

It would be easy at this point to dismiss One For The Boys as another rock chick in the style of Alanis Morissette. Certainly, her lyrics can be as biting and scathing as those that helped to make Jagged Little Pill stand out from the crowd.

But Perry’s biggest problem is that she’s too rooted in formula. If I Kissed A Girl sounded like a breath of fresh air from the likes of Sugababes, Girls Aloud, Estelle and Mariah Carey – in that she’s a female singer capable of appealing to the boys as well as the girls – then by the time you’ve finished listening to the rest of the long-player, you may well have tired of it.

Perry is so keen to be seen as a new music rebel that she’s clearly got some growing up to do. Her feisty attitude is refreshing on album opener One For The Boys, when lyrics such as “I saw a spider, I didn’t scream, because I can belch the alphabet, just double dog dare me” and “I chose the guitar over ballet”, are cleverly married to a few “da dahs” that are reminiscent of Grey’s Anatomy-style soundtrack fillers.

And there’s even a keen sense of fun to be found on Waking Up In Vegas, which encourages listeners to put their money where their mouths are, but by the time you hit Ur So Gay and her lament at an ex-boyfriend that begins with “I hope you hang yourself with your H&M scarf, while jacking off listening to Mozart”, you may well be starting to tire of her. Not to mention the fact that “you’re so gay, and you don’t even like boys” is one of the worst choruses of the year.

One song earlier, on Mannequin, Perry even laments “you’re not a man, you’re just a mannequin” about another object of affection, adding “I want to hit you just to see if you cry”. Maybe it’s little wonder that Perry seeks solace in kissing girls, if that’s her attitude towards men!

There’s an attempt at an acoustic love song on the whispered delivery of Lost, but ironically even then Perry suffers by sounding too conformative of the acoustic folk scene.

The overall result, therefore, is something of a disappointment from a singer who promised so much more.
