Mary Poppins posts closing notices

THE MUSICAL Mary Poppins will complete a two-year run at the West End’s Prince Edward Theatre on January 12, 2008, prior to an extensive regional tour.

Although not yet confirmed, the Broadway transfer of the Frankie Valli musical Jersey Boys is expected in the new year.

Previously Posted: From May 21, 2007, Scarlett Strallen returns as the eponymous nanny in Mary Poppins at the West End’s Prince Edward Theatre.

Strallen first played Mary Poppins in 2005 when she replaced Laura Michelle Kelly who originated the role on stage.

Her other credits include Mamma Mia! and Peggy Sue Got Married (cast ensemble); Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (as Truly Scrumptious); and Twelfth Night and HMS Pinafore (both at at the Open Air Theatre).

The current cast includes Lisa O’Hare (Mary Poppins) who is leaving the cast to star in the American tour of My Fair Lady, Gavin Creel (Bert), Aden Gillett (George Banks) and Rebecca Thornhill (Winifred Banks).

Previously Posted: From November 6, 2006, Lisa O’Hare will take over from Scarlett Strallen as the titular nanny in the hit musical Mary Poppins, which is currently booking until December 2007 at the Prince Edward Theatre.

A member of the original cast, O’Hare was, in fact, understudy for the lead role, a part she performed on several occasions. Her other stage credits include Acorn Antiques, Anything Goes and the touring production of My Fair Lady in which shared the role of Eliza Doolittle with Amy Nuttall.

Further cast changes have also been announced. Winifred Banks will be played by Rebecca Thornhill whose previous theatre credits include Singin’ in the Rain (for which she received a 2001 Olivier nomination), Chicago, The Witches of Eastwick and Les Miserables.

With Zee Asha (Mama Morton in Chicago) as Mrs Brill, Romy Baskerville (Naked, The Tempest and Bingo) as Birdwoman, and Howard Jones as Robertson Ay.

Previously Posted: From June 26, 2006, American actor Gavin Creel will take over the role of cockney chimney sweep Bert, in the hit musical Mary Poppins at the West End’s Prince Edward Theatre.

Gavin Lee who created the role when the show opened two years ago, will reprise the role in the Broadway production which opens at the New Amsterdam theatre in November.

Although Creel will be making his West End debut in Mary Poppins, he has appeared on stage many times in America.

His Broadway roles include Jimmy in Thoroughly Modern Millie (2002), for which he received a Tony Award nomination, and Jean Michael in the comedy La Cage Aux Folles (2004).

His other theatre credits include Stephen Sondheim’s Bounce at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, Hair and Bat Boy.

Creel will join the current cast of Mary Poppins which includes Scarlett Strallen as the eponymous nanny, Aden Gillett as George Banks and Louise Gold as Miss Andrew.
