Anna Karenina - Jack Studio Theatre
Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
ARROWS & Traps Theatre Company is presenting Helen Edmundson’s adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina at the Jack Studio Theatre – from Tuesday, March 15 to Saturday, April 2, 2016.
I was married to someone before I understood the meaning of love. – Anna
Anna Karenina, the wife of a provincial governor, revolts against a superficial existence of compromise and embarks on a scandalous affair with a charming officer Count Vronsky. As Anna is brought to the brink of destruction, she must finally decide whom she is living for.
Arrows & Traps Theatre Company bring Tolstoy’s epic novel to life, translating a thousand pages, and a cast of nearly that many, into a visceral, intimate chamber drama, filled with blossoming romance and bloodied revolution. This is a timeless tale that speaks to our human right to live, and love, and be free.
The cast includes Cornelia Baumann (as Dolly), Pippa Caddick (Kitty/Seriozha/Countess Vronsky), Adam Elliott (Karenin), Ellie Jacob (Anna Karenina), Will Mytum (Vronsky/Nikolai), Spencer Lee Osborne (Stiva/Vassily/Priest/Petritsky), David Paisley (Levin) and Hannah Wilder (Princess Betsy/Agatha/Governess/Russian Widow).
Helen Edmundson’s plays include The Clearing (Bush Theatre), Mother Teresa is Dead (Royal Court Theatre), Mary Shelley (Shared Experience at The Tricycle and on tour) and The Heresy of Love (Royal Shakespeare Company). Her other work includes Coram Boy (National Theatre and on Broadway), a new version of Calderon’s Life is a Dream (The Donmar), a musical adaptation of Swallows and Amazons, written with composer Neil Hannon (Bristol Old Vic, West End and on tour) and Thérèse Raquin (Bath Theatre Royal and on Broadway).
Produced by Samuel Morgan Grahame, Anna Karenina is directed by Ross McGregor and designed by Remy Moynes, with lighting by Martin Condon and sound by Gareth Kearns.
Anna Karenina is suitable for ages 12+.
