Jonathan Pryce is the Globe's Shylock and Michelle Terry its Rosalind

SHAKESPEARE’S Globe has announced that multi-award-winning actor Jonathan Pryce will play Shylock in Jonathan Munby’s forthcoming production of The Merchant of Venice, which opens the Globe’s 2015 summer season on April 23.

And Olivier Award-winning actress Michelle Terry will star as Rosalind in Blanche McIntyre’s As You Like It, which opens on May 15.

Jonathan Pryce CBE is an internationally-acclaimed stage and screen actor. His extensive theatre work includes Comedians in London and on Broadway, for which he won a Tony Award; Hamlet in London, for which he received an Olivier Award; and Miss Saigon, in which he starred on both sides of the Atlantic, winning further Olivier and Tony Awards.

Most recently, Pryce gave seminal performances in Harold Pinter’s The Caretaker in London and New York, and as the title role in the Almeida’s King Lear (pictured).

Pryce’s film credits include Something Wicked This Way Comes, Brazil, Glengarry Glen Ross, Carrington (for which he won the Cannes Film Festival and Evening Standard Awards for Best Actor), Evita and Tomorrow Never Dies. He was nominated for an Emmy Award for his performance in Cranford: Return to Cranford, and he will shortly be appearing as Cardinal Wolsey in the landmark television adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall.

Michelle Terry returns to the Globe following her critically-acclaimed performance as Titania in Dominic Dromgoole’s 2013 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and her 2009 turn in Love’s Labour’s Lost. In 2011, she won an Olivier Award for her portrayal of Sylvia in Tribes at the Royal Court. Her other recent theatre credits include Before The Party (Almeida), In the Republic of Happiness (Royal Court) and Love’s Labour’s Won (RSC). Her work at the National Theatre includes The Comedy of Errors, London Assurance, All’s Well That Ends Well and England People Very Nice.

Between 2011 and 2013 she co-wrote (with Ralf Little) and starred in the Sky1 comedy drama series The Café.

The Merchant of Venice runs from April 23 to June 7 and As You Like It runs from May 15 to September 5.
