Royal Court plays swap Upstairs for Downstairs

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

THIS summer, the Royal Court Theatre is staging three plays that were performed just last year in the intimate Jerwood Theatre Upstairs, in the larger Jerwood Theatre Downstairs.

The Ugly One by German playwright Marius von Mayenburg – June 10 to June 28, 2008.

Michael Gould reprises the role of Lette, a man who turns to plastic surgery when the extent of his ugliness is revealed. It’s only when the bandages are removed that he realises there is such a thing as being too beautiful.

As previously, The Ugly One will be directed by Ramin Gray.

Free Outgoing by Anupama Chandrasekhar – July 2 to July 19, 2008.

When Malini, a well-behaved Indian girl is filmed having sex in her classroom, the video clip spreads like a virus. Transmitted from person to person and across the globe, it infects firstly the local community and then seemingly the entire world with a burning moral outrage.

Indhu Rubasingham directs Lolita Chakrabarti as Malini.

Gone Too Far! by Bola Agbaje – July 23 to August 9, 2008.

When two brothers from different continents go down the street to buy a pint of milk, they lift the lid on a disunited nation where everyone wants to be an individual but no one wants to stand out from the crowd.

Described as a comic, vibrant and perceptive play about identity, history and culture, Agbaje’s debut play depicts a world where respect is always demanded but rarely freely given.

Gone Too Far!, which has been nominated for an Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre, will again be directed by Bijan Sheibani.

Further casting for all three plays has yet to be announced.
