Sandra Bernhard: Whatever It Takes

Sandra Bernhard

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

SANDRA Bernhard returns to the West End for the first time in two years with a show based on her latest album, Whatever It Takes. Scheduled for just five performances at Leicester Square Theatre, it runs from Wednesday, February 9 to Sunday, February 13, 2011.

The album Whatever It Takes is described as an inspired mix of sophistication, sensuality and pure rock and roll, stirred with the rousing passion of authentic world music.

Reflective of Bernhard’s rebellious nature, and powered by her sincere passion for new sounds and rhythms, the album is a musical cross-cultural road trip which travels musically from New York, to Africa, the Middle East, and South America.

An accomplished comedienne, actress, singer, and writer, whose career spans 25 years, Bernhard defies easy categorisation. However, her live performances – part comedy, part social satire, and part cabaret – showcase her astonishing range of talents.

In 1998, her one-woman Broadway hit, I’m Still Here… Damn It! received rave reviews.

Her last London show celebrated the 20th anniversary of her award-winning production, Without You I’m Nothing. A huge success worldwide, the groundbreaking show served as inspiration for the critically acclaimed film and Grammy-nominated album of the same name.

Her other musical performances include An Evening with Sandra Bernhard, Stormy Weather Benefit ’98, organised by Don Henley and featuring Stevie Nicks and Joni Mitchell, and The Elton John Tribute for Broadway Cares.

Her screen credits include Martin Scorseses’ 1983 film classic The King of Comedy, for which she won the Best Supporting Actress award in the National Society of Film Critics Awards, as well as Roseanne (as Nancy, a role she played from 1991-1996), Ally McBeal, Chicago Hope and Will & Grace.

And in 2001, Bernhard hosted her own TV talk show, The Sandra Bernhard Experience.
