Previously Posted: The Cause by Jeremy James receives its world premiere at Jermyn Street Theatre, where it runs from March 4 (previews from March 1) to March 26, 2016.

1963 Oxfordshire – an ageing, heavily accented painter seeks the help of a psychoanalyst to look into the causes of his sudden partial paralysis, which seems to have no physical origins.

Memories of some forty years earlier transport him back to his homeland of the Balkans and Hungary of 1914, to his youthful political zealotry, to the fervour for independence, to a planned act of enormous international consequence and an actual act of grave personal cost.

What emerges is Sandor’s devastating experience, the intensely personal yet massively political story of a man who was in Sarajevo on that Summer’s day in 1914 when Archduke Ferdinand drove into town and when a single event took place that was to shape the twentieth century.

Based on actual events, The Cause explores themes of urgent contemporary resonance, of nationalism, fanaticism, youthful zeal and its exploitation by those with an extremist agenda. By illuminating events of the past, The Cause sheds a stark light on the present.

Jeremy James has written numerous Christmas shows for children and an extensive range of promotional and training films for corporate clients, principally financial institutions. Many of the films have featured such well-known 1960s actors as Arthur Lowe, Robert Morley, James Robertson Justice, Michael Denison, Dulcie Gray, Donald Sinden. Edward Judd and Bill Pertwee.

The Cause is directed by Andrew Shepherd, who originally trained as an actor at LAMDA after completing his law degree at Newcastle University. Recent directing credits include the sell out productions of Much Ado About Nothing and Hamlet (Park Theatre), A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Othello (Chelsea Theatre) and the award-winning Trainspotting (Leicester Square Theatre).

Shepherd is the Artistic Director of ACS Random, which he founded and the author of a number of plays and screenplays. He was recently announced as the new Executive Director of Theatre 503.

Presented by ACS Random in association with Jermyn Street Theatre, The Cause is designed by Zahra Mansouri, with lighting by Julian MacCready and original music and sound by Dimitri Scarlatto.

Tickets: £22, £18 concessions. Earlybird offer if booked online before February 22 – £17. To book, call the box office on 0207 287 2875 or visit www.jermynstreettheatre.co.uk/.
